In a post-apocalyptic world, a diverse group of survivors are living in a shelter, but they're running out of air. The community leaders decide to execute those who are guilty of doing bad to the community, in order to keep the most important people alive. The daughter of the leader, Joanna, is in love with a guy from a lower class, but their love is forbidden.

Joanna's initiation into the group of leaders is on that same day and they have to decide what to do with a thief who has been accused of stealing precious resources. However, it turns out the accused is indeed her loved, and Joanna knows he's innocent. She tries to convince her father that he should not be executed. This coming-of-age story explores the themes of the harsh reality of society's needs vs individual needs, and the dishonesty that exists in the world.
